A Positive Visit

Well if Asher performed at his absolute worst for the NICU assessment, he was at his best today for our IDP worker. He was in fine form, showing off all his tricks, not to mention stopping every few seconds to flash a giant smile - what a flirt!

It was such a relief to see him showing what he really is capable and even more of a relief to hear all her positivity. She hasn't seen him in 4 weeks and noticed major improvements in his skills. Of course so have we, but it was good to hear her point out specific examples of things he has improved on.

I love having her involved to reassure us. For instance today she noted how good his fine motor skills are in his hands. We had also noticed this, but continue to be fixated on the fact that he can't move his arms properly. She said the fact that he is developing fine motor skills despite the fact that his gross motor skills aren't up to par is hugely positive. Often times the fine motor is negatively affected if the gross motor that should develop first is delayed.

I can't even begin to say how much better I feel. It's not like she said "Oh he's going to be FINE and none of his problems matter", but as she always does with her visits, she focussed on all the improvements and less on the struggles. He is improving every day, we just need to remember that.
