Snow on the Brain

Ok today's title is slightly more creative. Yes, snow is on the brain because we had a massive snowfall last night (by Victoria's standards anyway - we got 10+ cm at our house). But also, Asher had to miss his neurologist's appointment today because we were home bound. So get it - snow on the brain. I'm pretty clever like that aren't I?! (This is where you nod in agreement.)

Anyway, I was up early this morning and anxious to look out the window. Yowsa! We haven't had this much snow in a while! For those of you unfamiliar with west coast weather, it doesn't snow here. Like EVER. Ok maybe once a winter, but we're not prepared for it at all when it happens. Jordan and I own one crappy shovel, we have no snow tires, and as I reported yesterday Rio didn't even have boots that fit her!  (Thank goodness Jordan and I have snowboard gear to wear when it gets really bad or we'd have nothing warm!)

Schools were closed and I quickly realized there was no way we were getting out of our street so we could say goodbye to the neurology appointment for Asher that I had been looking forward to. Once I got over being angry about that, it turned into the perfect snow day.

All five of us went outside to play in the back yard. It took about half an hour to get the kids ready, then within less than 15 minutes the boys were ready to come in. At first the novelty of it thrilled them. We pulled them around in their wagon and then got them out to lie in the snow. But when you are at ground level in the snow, it gets (c)old pretty fast. In no times faces were wet, gloves and boots were off and boys were cranky.  As you can see, they looked ridiculously cute all bundled up for the short time we had them out there.

Cozy!

Trying to figure out crawling

"Ok you've laid me here - now what?"

Really can't figure out what to do with himself and starting to get mad!

Momentarily impressed by the slide but it didn't last!

Once the men went in, Rio and I stayed outside for an impromptu tobogganing session. For the first time ever, I didn't curse our long sloped driveway, but actually made some use of it - a sled run for Rio. I have to admit I got pretty into it. At first I was just pulling her down the driveway but before long I had built up safety banks at the bottom and sides and we were having a blast! We stayed at that for a good hour and then when she got tired, I took to shoveling. What a novel idea - I'm not sure I've wielded a shovel since I lived in Trail where I obviously got plenty of practice.

Waiting to come down

Resting at the bottom

Well 1.5 hours later I had shoveled every possible surface around our house. Jordan said I was making him look bad, and indeed I was, with our next door neighbour (male) and our tenant (also male) out there with me. That said, I was thoroughly enjoying myself but I know my old lady back will pay the price for it later. It was -7c today (also freezing for Victoria) but I was working too hard to notice!

For the rest of the day we've all been in jammies and either napping or next to the roaring fireplace. Now Jordan is cooking us a lovely dinner and we'll hunker down with a movie. Pretty much a perfect day. That said, I only need one of these a year and am not looking forward to the further 10 cm we're supposed to get tonight. I'm actually hoping for another snow day at school so I don't need to worry about getting Rio and a stroller to and from school when Jordan is at work.  Hmm. We'll make the best of it somehow!

To those of you in Victoria, hope you've enjoyed this day as much as we have, and if you're on the roads stay safe!

  1. had 2 choices stay in vic another night and risk being stranded or take the Malahat last night, one thing NEVER again. This white stuff can go away (I seemed to bring the storm home) way to many trips in the next few weeks makes me not like the white stuff!

  2. sooooo fun, great pics! Nice to the family loving the white stuff. And you know, you probably got in a little meditation time with the shovel, it's awesome how that can feel.

  3. I love your creative title : ) We haven't had too much snow in Pennsylvania this year. Thank goodness : ) I mean, it is very pretty but I just hate driving in it. Congratulations on being the best shoveler around!
